Catholic Young Adults Questions Answered. ..Q and A with a Priest

Q and A with Fr L at St Jude’s Vancouver

-The Trinity.  Three persons in one God. 1 supreme being in three persons. If God is love, it cannot be any other way. You can’t have love unless there is someone to love…love always looks for someone to love. The father is the lover, the son is loved and the Holy Spirit is the love between them. The Father loves the Son. When you love someone, you give them everything you have.  The Son receives everything the Father has (His divinity). The Son loves the Father back and He is grateful to the Father. The Son wants to give His whole self back to the Father. The Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son.

-Merits: for the temporal punishment due to our sins.
There are two types of punishment: temporal and eternal punishment(hell).
We can’t merit heaven. Jesus died for us and that’s all that can get us into heaven.
We offer up the merits to or through Mary? Through maybe

-Mary,  Mother of God because Jesus is God. In Jesus Christ, there is His Divine nature and He also was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary so He took on human nature. Those two natures are joined together in the person of Jesus Christ. He was fully God and fully human. Mary is not the origin of God. God preexisted her.

Mediatrix of all Grace- because she gave birth to Jesus and Jesus won for us the grace of salvation.

Marian Consecration:
Just as Mary’s whole life was dedicated to Jesus. Mary’s whole existence was for Jesus. We’re asking Mary to get to her Son. Mary was given to us at the foot of the cross. The unnamed disciple stood for all of us. The Lord loved her immensely so why wouldn’t give her to us.

In the Old Testament, intentions were asked of the King through the King’s mother.

Communion of Saints- we are all closely connected to each other because we are one in Christ, due to our baptism. Even death cannot break this bond but damnation does. The same way I can ask my family to pray for me on earth and it’s the same way with the saints.

Tortue isn’t okay.

Why did they sacrifice in the old testament? It was kind of a foreshadowing of what Jesus Christ will do.
It was probably a temporal atonement rather than an eternal atonement. It didn’t bring salvation to anyone because if it did, then we wouldn’t need Jesus.

Why am I Catholic?
Because I believe that the fullness of God’s revelation is found in the teaching of the Catholic Church.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into Heaven, and seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

-We also spoke about yoga and new age practices. Fr L doesn’t know much about them so Nathan explained. He said that saying ‘Christian Yoga’ is an oxymoron and a delusion. You really can’t completely take the religious aspect out of yoga no matter your intentions…it is like reciting the rosary but you are saying that you aren’t praying.So why are you even bothering?

I must say that my most memorable quote was from M.I can’t remember the exact words so I will paraphrase…when asked why he converted, He said that he reached a point which was the end. Total darkness…There were two options: Find a way up or stay at that dark end. He chose to go up. Praise the Lord.
