Friendship (Part 1)

So some months back, I went to a friendship show, hosted by the high school girls of Crestwell Center. I wrote on my phone to search Cicero, Aristotle, Socrates and Plato quotes on friendship. Then I came acroos some golden frienship quotes by Cicero on this website Thank you to whoever owns the website because the following quotes were retrieved from there!!

You have often urged me to write something on Friendship, and I quite acknowledged that the subject seemed one worth everybody’s investigation, and specially suited to the close intimacy that has existed between you and me. Accordingly I was quite ready to benefit the public at your request.
Cicero, Marcus Tullius On Friendship 44 B.C.

For I am not one of these modern philosophers who maintain that our souls perish with our bodies, and that death ends all. With me ancient opinion has more weight: whether it be that of our own ancestors, who attributed such solemn observances to the dead, as they plainly would not have done if they had believed them to be wholly annihilated; […]
Cicero, Marcus Tullius On Friendship 44 B.C.

But I must at the very beginning lay down this principle—friendship can only exist between good men.
Cicero, Marcus Tullius On Friendship 44 B.C.

We mean then by the “good” those whose actions and lives leave no question as to their honour, purity, equity, and liberality; who are free from greed, lust, and violence; and who have the courage of their convictions. The men I have just named may serve as examples. Such men as these being generally accounted “good,” let us agree to call them so, on the ground that to the best of human ability they follow nature as the most perfect guide to a good life.
Cicero, Marcus Tullius On Friendship 44 B.C.

I also love these quotes by Cicero on friendship retrieved from various internet sources.

“Life is nothing without friendship.”

“A friend is, as it were, a second self”

“What sweetness is left in life, if you take away friendship?  Robbing life of friendship is like robbing the world of the sun. A true friend is more to be esteemed than kinsfolk.” —- Marcus Tullius Cicero

“Friendship is the only thing in the world concerning usefulness in which all mankind are agreed.”

“Friends are proved by adversity.”

“Friendship makes prosperity brighter, while it lightens adversity by sharing its grieves and anxieties.”

“The rule of friendship means there should be mutual sympathy between them, each supplying what the other lacks and trying to benefit the other, always using friendly and sincere words.”

“Friendship improves happiness and abates misery, by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief.” -Cicero

And now, I will start to rant about my friends. LOL.

I think one of the greatest blessings that I have been given is truly awesome friends, people that I know can literally die for me. That is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot but I have experienced a situation that my friends were ready to risk their lives for me.

Back in secondary school(an all-girls boarding school run by reverend sisters in the middle of nowhere…Ijebu-itele is the name o the place but we were surrounded by bushes), a parent decided to travel down to the school on a random day but she noticed that a black car was following her. The parent tried to detour but no matter where she went the black car followed and as a result, she got scared. So the parent alerted the school and my principal who is the most ladylike person I have ever come across, took off her shoes and asked that all classes should be stopped and we should run to the dorms as quietly and quickly as possible.

This seems like an easy thing to do,right  except I could not run.I I decided that it was a smarter decision to stay in class and pray that nothing happened to me. And my friends decided that there was no point of them running to safety if I was in danger so they stayed with me. And then I started crying because I was like if anything happened to them, I wont forgive myself but they were like “No, everything will be alright’. It would also interest you guys to know that I was in school with my two sisters and I had no idea where my sisters were at that point. Later on, I learnt that my big sister was in the physics lab (a bit far from the classes at least for me) and her teacher told them to stay and pray. They prayed the rosary in the lab because it was just not worth it to run all the way from the lab to dorms. My other sister had actually  run to the dorms for safety, lol. I probably would have done the same if I could.

That also reminds me of the time that our neighbors’ dog attacked me, I was with my sister one minute and the next the dog was biting me and my sister had fled for her safety. So really, I dont even remember if my friends recall doing this gesture but to me it was one of the best things anyone had ever done for me. At the end of the day, the black car following the parent didn’t enter the school. However, I think we got the rest of the day off anyways because we were all shaken up by the scare. I know I was!

Just a little bit of background info, my school had been attacked by armed robbers a couple of years before. They just fired one of the security guards so the robbers had insiders info.  The robbers attacked the sisters in the convent and they broke one of the sister’s hands and hit my principal with a sledgehammer on her forehead. But the sisters kept begging that they should please not touch the girls. The robbers came asking them for the dollars they had. Have they not heard that reverend sisters take a vow of poverty? Anyways after the attack, the sisters had to sleep in the dorms for a while and we got BSG guards a couple of years later.BSG guards were scary though. I hope this makes you understand why they really do not take security threats lightly especially as we were all female students and we were not in the city so it would take time for police or anyone to get to us.

Most of my best and favorite people are the friends that I made in secondary school. Time and time again, they really made me feel loved and accepted and just so happy. So I would like to say Praise God for you all, you know yourselves and you’re the best ❤ Miss you so much!

I also really hate taking pictures so I don’t have pictures with a lot of people that are dear to my heart but I hope that we’ll have many more years as friends and can take a million pictures in the years to come. So if you are my friend and have a picture of us, please send it to me 🙂
